Should we ban smoking in public places?

Activists argue a ban on smoking cigarettes in public places would benefit society. Others argue that smoking outdoors is already heavily regulated in many areas and would leave them without a place to smoke. While unhealthy, it isn't illegal to smoke. What do you think? 🚬

Technically smoking outdoors can be a health risk to non-smokers, but the risk is pretty negligible and easy to compensate for.

The more open the space and the farther away you are, the lower your smoke exposure. To get the kind of exposure you'd suffer indoors, you have to stand within two feet of the smoker. Move seven feet away, and you're "close to background," i.e., breathing normal air. I recommend greater distance than that, just to be safe. But you don't need to ban smoking throughout Central Park.

Many cities have gone ahead and banned smoking in public areas. It might be inconvenient for some smokers, but no one really needs to smoke.

A lot of people think they should be allowed to smoke outside. Many smokers already move away from nonsmokers and besides, it's a personal choice to smoke and people shouldn't be regulated out of making personal choices.
