Europe is increasingly seeing lone-wolf attackers commit acts of terrorism in the name of ISIS. Some argue the EU must close its borders to protect itself. But others argue that you can’t defeat ideology with walls. Instead, it’s a matter of winning hearts and minds.

Why should the EU close its borders?

Those who support closing the border argue that open borders make it too easy for terrorists to cross into Europe. The idea of open borders is nice, but it simply does not work in the reality we live in today. With tighter controls, it will be easier to find, monitor and track terrorists before they attack.

Why should the EU keep its borders open?

Those in support of keeping the border open argue that closing the borders won’t solve anything. Tighter controls and profiling will only alienate people and feed into ISIS ideology. They argue that instead of closing the borders, more things like the Aarhus model must be done. This strategy brings potential extremists back into the fold while giving authorities a way of keeping an eye on them.

Closing the EU borders means changing our values, and giving into the terrorists. We must fight back but we cannot let the terrorists change our values.

Coming down hard on people already on the fringes will only push them into ISIS' hands. Integrating people fights ISIS ideology and lets the authorities keep an eye on potential attackers.
