Instagram recently announced their plans to roll out new age limit requirements for their users. New members will be prompted to input their birth date, those younger than 13 thus being blocked from joining. This is part of an effort to tackle mental health issues that social apps have on developing minds. Some are all for this policy, believing that all social media apps should implement age limitations. Others think it’s not only unnecessary, but useless. What do you think?

Barring kids from going on social is certainly in line with the fact it’s absolutely illegal to mine data from anyone that’s not of age. But there’s more to it than just that. The emotional, mental, and sometimes physical affect that too much social media has on developing souls is wreaking havoc, the repercussions of which remain to be seen. Any type of precautions taken to combat said havoc should be taken now in order to avoid serious damage later.

Apps—particular image-heavy apps such as Instagram—have a responsibility to ensure their users are safe while using their services. This includes keeping people off apps who are not yet ready for them. The selfies can wait.

What, pray tell, is putting an age limit on social media going to do? Because, you know, the internet is still a thing. If one app becomes unattainable to younger generations, there’s still a million other ways they can become exposed to other harmful things on the world wide web. At the end of the day, a child’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being is imparted by parents and guardians. They should be the ones monitoring their kid’s time online, taking them aside to support them and explain them the difference between what exists on their and what’s reality.

Kids are also super crafty, more than they’re given credit for. You really think that, should age limits be placed on apps, that not a one will find some workaround to get on there? Please. Like that worked with drinking.
