Should Milo Yiannopoulos have been banned from Twitter?

Leslie Jones didn't even get the chance to fully enjoy her successful weekend at the box office. Instead, she was faced with racist trolls on Twitter who referred to her by derogatory slurs and sent her racist imagery. Leslie decided not to ignore or block the trolls, but put their hatred on blast. And the tweets she shared were pretty sickening. She pleaded with Twitter to address the matter, but eventually, Leslie decided to take a break from the social platform.

Supporters and fellow celebrities came to Leslie's aid with #LoveForLeslieJ. With Leslie's plea and the social media campaign, one of Twitter' most infamous trolls has had his account permanently deleted: Milo Yiannopoulos! While he didn't send the most offensive material, Milo did Tweet to Leslie that she is "Barely literate. America needs better schools!" and called her a Black man by tweeting, "rejected by yet another black dude," after Leslie blocked him. Milo is no stranger to controversy. He often uses the phrase "feminism is cancer." Some consider his ban a victory. But in the wake of the permanent ban of Milo, others have begun sharing #FreeMilo.

Should Milo Yiannopoulos have been banned from Twitter?

Many of Milo's followers are blasting Twitter for deleting the controversial figure's account. Critics think Twitter banned him because the platform simply doesn't like the gay conservative. His defenders say his speech doesn't qualify as extreme hate speech, but is pointed criticism marked with acerbic humor. Yes, Leslie received a lot of actual racist and hateful tweets, but they didn't come directly from Milo. They view his banning as misplaced punishment of Milo and discrimination itself, against his conservative ideals.

This doesn't even represent the worst abuse that Leslie received. Without a doubt, there are many accounts that crossed the line in attacking Leslie.

Milo (@Nero) had responded to Leslie saying that she was "playing the victim" because of bad reviews for the 'Ghostbusters' movie. His criticism continued from there. Leslie blocked him.

After talk about leaving the platform forever, Twitter took action and permanently banned Milo. He's definitely a lighting rod for controversy. But many say his specific tweets, while part of a larger onslaught of hate, weren't themselves worthy of banning.

Twitter's statement to Recode on removing @Nero: "People should be able to express diverse opinions and beliefs on Twitter. But no one deserves to be subjected to targeted abuse online, and our rules prohibit inciting or engaging in the targeted abuse or harassment of others. Over the past 48 hours in particular, we’ve seen an uptick in the number of accounts violating these policies and have taken enforcement actions against these accounts, ranging from warnings that also require the deletion of Tweets violating our policies to permanent suspension. We know many people believe we have not done enough to curb this type of behavior on Twitter. We agree. We are continuing to invest heavily in improving our tools and enforcement systems to better allow us to identify and take faster action on abuse as it's happening and prevent repeat offenders. We have been in the process of reviewing our hateful conduct policy to prohibit additional types of abusive behavior and allow more types of reporting, with the goal of reducing the burden on the person being targeted. We’ll provide more details on those changes in the coming weeks."

April Reign: But free speech can (and should) lead to consequences. Indeed, this isn't a first amendment issue, since Twitter is a private company.
