Scientists say we have entered a new epoch | The Tylt
We're number one! We're number one!
A group of scientists voted that in around 1950, as plutonium debris became widespread throughout the planet, we entered a new epoch called Anthropocene. As the name 'anthro' suggests, the defining characteristic of this epoch in Earth's history is how humans are shaping the planet.
It's true, in the last 70 years humans have had influence on the Earth that is detectable in the strata, thus defining a new age. But cynics wonder if we're being a little egotistical. We are still a blip on the radar. This is perhaps calling the match before any fat lady has sung.

The ultimate expression of the Anthropocene would be sponsored geological time. The Cocacolacene. The Doritocene. The GoldmanSachcene.— Ian Bogost (@ibogost) August 30, 2016
The Ecomodernist goal: 'decoupling' humans from the natural environment. Don't buy into the myth of the Anthropocene!— DeepGreenResistance (@deepgreenresist) August 21, 2016
