Should you keep your read receipts on or off?

The novelty of read receipts quickly wore off once everyone realized they could be used for evil as well as good. Some say read receipts are a great productivity tool; they provide transparency into when your messages have been seen by the person you are texting. Others say the reality of read receipts is a world of crushing anxiety—is someone leaving you as read on purpose or are they actually busy? What do you think: Are read receipts the best or the worst?

Read receipts provide transparency into the texting process. You can see when your texts are successfully delivered, but if your receipts are off, the sender has no idea whether or not their message has truly been received.

Read receipts take guesswork and assumptions out of the picture; keeping them on is a courtesy to your friends.

Despite their potential to hold texters accountable to responding, read receipts are often used for evil, rather than good. Vice's Linda Yang asked a number of people about their texting habits and their feelings on read receipts. One respondent, Alexa, had this to say:

Since iMessage came out, I have only turned my read receipts on once. My boyfriend at the time told me that he wanted to take a break for the summer. For some unknown reason, he thought the conversation went well.
Afterwards, my friend and I headed to a soccer game. My boyfriend was obsessed with soccer and kept texting me throughout the game to get updates. He has just told me he wanted a break, so I did the most passive aggressive thing I could think of: I turned on my read receipts for the first time to let him know I was ignoring him...After that, I returned to my sketch ways; my read receipts are now off.

Herein lies the danger of read receipts. They are not a tool of deception, but instead provide perfect clarity into the head of the person you are texting. Alexa left her boyfriend on read, and he got the message.

When used responsibly, read receipts take the guesswork out of texting. Who among us hasn't assumed someone is not responding on purpose? You know they saw the text. And no, you will not stand for such as excuses like "OMG I typed out my response, but then never pressed send. Sorry!!" Read receipts can end these moments of passive aggressive nonsense by holding people accountable.

Digg's Kelsey McKinney explains how read receipts can even transform relationships. Erin, McKinney writes, used to believe her boyfriend was ignoring her early on in their relationship. Once her boyfriend accidentally turned on his read receipts, everything changed:

"It was such a game changer because I could see that he was texting me whenever he had his phone," she says. "It helped me not be so in my head about what his texting habits mean and to just focus on what he's saying.

The guesswork of read receipts is not worth the potential benefit. Some argue that read receipts provide clarity; even if someone leaves you on read, you at least know they received and saw your message.

But what this thinking fails to take into account is the many, many hours everyone spends overanalyzing their communication with other people. We live in a world of written correspondence, leaving digital paper trails that you can scroll through for ages, to only then share with your friends so they can provide their own analysis.

In reality, if someone leaves you on read, you go through five stages of texting anxiety. Someone saw your message, so why did they not reply? If they were busy, why look at the message at all? Are they mad for some reason? Are they ignoring you? Did they turn on their read receipts on purpose so you would know they are ignoring you?

For some people, nothing can convince them that read receipts are worth it. The world is already chained to technology; there's no need to further burden yourself with receipts.
