The New York Times says untreated, unfiltered “raw water” is trending big in California. Fans say so-called raw or unprocessed water contains no fluoride, has never touched a lead pipe, and offers beneficial minerals that are removed from treated or filtered water.  But skeptics say this hot new fad is just some hot new garbage from the GOOP brigade, designed to sell "natural" products to rich antivaxxers—also, it could kill you. What do you think?💧 🚰 💧

"Raw water"? More like raw sewage. 884 million people in the world lack access to safe water supplies, but leave it to privileged people in a developed nation to complain about how it's "unnatural" to treat water.

“Without water treatment, there’s acute and then chronic risks,” Dr. Hensrud said, including E. coli bacteria, viruses, parasites and carcinogenic compounds that can be present in untreated water. “There’s evidence all over the world of this, and the reason we don’t have those conditions is because of our very efficient water treatment.”

But raw water companies are attracting attention and investment from tech’s health-conscious elite. Silicon Valley entrepreneur Doug Evans is a big raw water evangelist. After his juicing company, Juicero, collapsed in September, he went on a 10-day cleanse, drinking nothing but Live Water.

“I haven’t tasted tap water in a long time,” he said.

Critics say this trend isn't just dangerous, it's ignorant and offensive.

It is not hard to see how twisted it is for a group of privileged people with access to safe municipal drinking water to spurn it in favor of something more dangerous when people in largely black and poor Flint, Michigan, are being poisoned with lead and people in largely black rural Alabama are contracting hookworm from untreated water.

But proponents argue that untreated fresh spring water that's free from fluoride is better for you.
