Does pineapple belong on a pizza?

Pizza purists say pineapple doesn't belong anywhere near a pizza crust. Pizza is a flavor masterpiece already: the tangy sauce perfectly balances the zesty cheese and the slightly-sweet crust. Even so, pineapple is one of the most popular pizza toppings in the U.S. Fans say pineapple is the sweet companion to the ham that typically comes with it, creating another beautiful sweet-and-salty classic. Is pineapple on pizza delicious, or just wrong?

According to HuffPost, pineapple is No. 9 on the list of most popular pizza toppings. In order to settle the debate, Independent's Chelsea Ritschel sought out pizza experts to see what they thought about the combination. According to Chef Emily of EMILY and Emmy Squared:

"People who live in hard absolutes with pizza have no fun in their lives” and everything, even pineapple, “is an acceptable pizza topping as long as it is balanced and not overpowering.”

Pineapple is the perfect supplement to your tangy pizza. Whether your pair it with ham, mushrooms or simply cheese, pineapple brings out the saltiness of your pie and brightens its overall flavor profile.

Don't be close-minded. Pineapple belongs on pizza.

Blasphemy! Sacrilege! Pineapple doesn't belong on a pizza any more than watermelon does. The world must have some sense of order. Pepperoni belongs on pizza. Garlic belongs on pizza. Even spinach belongs on pizza. But pineapple? Absolutely not. Tomato sauce is enough fruit for one pie.

As Chef Gordon Ramsey puts it, according to HuffPost

“You don’t put fucking pineapple on pizza.”
