Netflix and Hulu occupy different spaces in the streaming service landscape. Netflix is the original streaming service. It's morphed into an original content behemoth with hit originals like "Stranger Things," "Orange is the New Black" and "Lost in Space." On the flip side, Hulu is pushing hard into partnerships and TV shows. It might not have "Stranger Things," but it does have pretty much every on-air show worth watching and original content like "The Handmaid's Tale." Which streaming service is the best? 📺

Netflix is the undeniable king of streaming. It has all the major hit shows. It is crushing it with original content. And chances are, your friend already has a subscription and will share the login information with you. People like Netflix over all of the other streaming services because it's simply got the best catalog out there. Most of the biggest shows the past few years have been Netflix Originals, and the ones that aren't are probably available to stream on the service anyway.

In 2016, Netflix spent $5 billion on original programming. Five of the 10 shows people searched for most often last year are Netflix originals, company officials said, citing Google data during an earnings call. Eager to build on that, Netflix plans to spend $6 billion creating 1000 hours of new content this year, more than doubling its 2016 lineup. At this point, it’s clear Netflix isn’t just a streaming service anymore. “For many millions of consumers around the world, Netflix has already become television,” says Tony Gunnarsson, a television analyst with Ovum.

Hulu is taking a very different approach to streaming. Netflix has just a few very good shows, and that's about it. Hulu has all of the current TV shows worth watching on its platform and is constantly adding more. Not only that, it has a huge library to choose from. It has a huge selection that goes deep and wide. If you're a TV or movie buff, Hulu simply makes more sense.

It’s not hard to see the appeal of Hulu to the studios with extensive back libraries of beloved TV shows. Hulu has ads, offering another source of revenue and thus a way to placate nervous sponsors, while Netflix doesn’t, and Hulu is more and more where people turn to catch the shows they miss the night before. While Hulu does have exclusive deals with some shows and networks, like Adult Swim, and it’s increasingly being ambitious with its original programming, it’s also turning into a deep library of TV history at your fingertips. On a film level, Hulu’s been surprisingly aggressive as well, collecting both recent hits and developing a deeper library, most recently collecting the back catalogue of beloved Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar.
