Should Britain get rid of the monarchy?

Much like America's Kardashians, Great Britain's royal family are both beloved and loathed. Many argue the monarchy is a ridiculously outdated and costly institution, and polling shows that 20 to 40 percent of Britons think their country would be better off without royals. But the royal family is still very popular, and supporters say they remain an important institution and symbol in British life. Should the monarchy be abolished? 🇬🇧👑 🚫

The Votes Are In!

Seumas Milne says a royal dynasty complete with inherited wealth and titles is utterly anti-democratic.

The monarchy's role is seen as illegitimate and offensive by millions of its citizens, and entrenches hereditary privilege at the heart of public life.

But The Economist posits that the royal family "is an institution that commands a great deal of affection," especially Diana's children and their spouses. Most Britons want to keep the monarchy.

IPSOS-MORI has been tracking opinion on the monarchy for the past 20 years....By a margin of well over three to one, respondents have favoured keeping the institution over turning Britain into a republic.

Many people are excited about the new generation of royals, who seemed genuinely devoted to public service. And Prince Harry's engagement to Meghan Markle has thrilled millions. Perhaps the monarchy just needs to modernize.

Others say it doesn't matter who they marry or how much public service they do. Inherited dynasties are wrong, entrench inequality, and should be abolished. Kings are totally last week and the U.K. needs to catch up with the rest of the developed world.
