Do you preorder your Starbucks for pick up or wait in line?

Not even five years ago, people were forced to wait in line to order their Starbucks, hurriedly skimming the menu before getting rushed by an angry barista to just make a decision, already. Now, people have the option of using the Starbucks app to preorder and pre-pay for their chosen beverage, enabling some to bypass the line of suckers who have no idea what an “app” is. Some, however, forgo the app in order to get more of a feel for what’s on the menu. What do you do?

The Starbucks app has made mornings less of a hassle and more of a…well, okay, still a hassle, but not one where you’re impatiently tapping your foot in a river of people still waiting for their morning caffeine. Instead, you can skip on in and out of Starbucks in less than a minute, entering your office on time with swag.

You also get bragging rights. Or smug rights, if you will. You knew what you wanted, you got what you wanted, and, most importantly, you saved time. There’s nothing like picking your skinny vanilla latte right off the special Starbucks VIP counter. Everyone stares, wondering who you are and how you secured such special treatment as you make a glamorous exit.

Now that preordering’s a thing, how can we ever go back? We can’t. Accept it.

Just because something’s fast and easy doesn’t mean it’s better. Preordering your Starbucks might mean less time spent with a bunch of other grumpy people, but think of the in-person ordering experience. Before you scoff at that last sentence, bear with me, please.

Waiting in line forces you to look at the menu as well as everything else around you. You get to take a gander at what’s new and popping, meaning you’ll be willing to try new things. Going for your usual order is all well and good, but how awesome is it when you discover something new and delicious? And how often does that happen when you’re just hitting the same, old “order” button in the same, old app time and again?

There’s also the additional plus of seeing how your drink is being made. You’re with it at every stage: the brewing, the foaming, the gentle pouring into a cup. It feels more like a reward, especially when you see it all ready and steaming in front of you. Drink up!
