Is Mercury retrograde ruining your life?
According to Astrology Zone, Mercury impacts a number of important areas in your life, including everything from communication and listening to formal contracts and agreements. Susan Miller adds:
Included under this planet’s domain are all types of code, including computer codes, as well as transportation, shipping, and travel. When this planet retrogrades, these areas tend to get scrambled or spin out of control.
According to Miller, when Mercury appears to move backward in the sky, astrology dictates the planet is then in a "resting or sleeping" state. She warns readers:
Therefore, while Mercury naps, the activities that it governs don’t have the benefit of a well-functioning, wide-awake planet to supervise them. Expect a certain degree of pandemonium to ensue!
As many know, it's easy for your life to go haywire when Mercury is in retrograde. Thankfully, October 31-November 20 is the last time Mercury will be in retrograde in 2019.
But Mental Floss' Michele Debczak points out there is no science to prove Mercury retrograde actually affects daily life:
"We don't know of any physical mechanism that would cause things like power outages or personality changes in people," Dr. Mark Hammergren, an astronomer at Chicago's Adler Planetarium, tells Mental Floss.
According to Hammergren, the consequences of Mercury retrograde are more of a placebo effect:
Dr. Hammergren blames the superstition attached to Mercury, and astrology as a whole, on confirmation bias: "[Believers] will say, 'Aha! See, there's a shake-up in my workplace because Mercury's retrograde.'"
Not everyone is on board with the idea that life turns upside down when Mercury starts it's "backward" journey. In reality, if Mercury doesn't impact your life during any other time of the year, it shouldn't when it's in retrograde either.
