Is marijuana bad or good for your health?

At the heart of the battle for the legalization of marijuana is one question: is it good or bad for your health? Advocates for legalization argue that weed offers a host of benefits, treating everything from chronic pain to anxiety. Others point to the risks of marijuana, saying that heavy use can lead to respiratory issues and more. What do you think?

The health benefits of marijuana are hard to ignore. Although there still research to be done, a comprehensive report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine shows marijuana can effectively treat chronic pain, muscle spasms and inflammation. Per Business Insider's Kevin Loria, researchers also disproved some common misconceptions about weed:

Perhaps surprisingly, the authors found moderate evidence (a pretty decent level of certainty and an indication that good data exists) that cannabis was not connected to any increased risk of the lung cancers or head and neck cancers associated with smoking.

Smokers themselves tout many benefits to weed beyond pain relief. As one user writes on Reddit:

Regular smoker here: much like anything it's all about moderation. I smoke enough to relax but I don't get completely baked regularly. My job is high stress and leaves me with little time between shifts so I use it mostly to sleep.

Others are not sold on the idea that marijuana has a net positive effect on one's health. Vox's German Lopez says of the same report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine:

For long-term marijuana smokers, there’s a risk of worse respiratory symptoms and more frequent chronic bronchitis episodes. For pregnant women who smoke pot, there’s a risk of lower birth weight for the baby. For marijuana users in general, there’s a greater risk of developing schizophrenia and other psychoses. And there’s a link between marijuana use and increased risk of car crashes.

Both sides of this debate will agree there is still much more research to be done on the topic. This camp chooses to exercise caution in the meantime.
