Does ketchup belong on a hot dog?

They are one of America's favorite foods. They belong at baseball games, barbecues and much more, yet there is much contention as to what belongs on a hot dog itself. Some argue that a hot dog is best in it's simplest state, topped with nothing but a line of mustard. Others welcome toppings like chili, onions, and sauerkraut. But hot dog aficionados continue to disagree on one topping in particular: ketchup. Does America's favorite condiment belong on one of America's classic meals? What do you think?

According to The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, ketchup definitively does not belong on hot dogs. Mental Floss reports:

According to the council, any person over the age of 18 should not top their hot dog with ketchup, despite the fact that over half of all Americans use the condiment.

Apparently, putting ketchup on a hot dog is akin to getting a toy with your Happy Meal: only acceptable when young.

But ketchup remains one of the most beloved condiments in America. Why wouldn't someone put it on their hot dog? If ketchup can go on a burger, it can go on a hot dog. Thrillist reports on one self-proclaimed "hot dog snob's" journey:

Honestly, I don't even care about ketchup. I'm ambivalent to it. I'll dip a wayward fry in it. I'll mix a little in with the rest of the sauces on a burger. But a squiggle on a hot dog–especially a good hot dog–is magical, giving a little kick of sweetness and acidity that complements the smoked tube steak in wonderful ways. It adds a layer, not a blanket. And it's glorious...Those who decry ketchup for 'ruining' a hot dog are most often students of the mustard-only school, or Chicagoans who put half a salad bar on their dogs. Mustard can be a good complement, but gobs of the stuff just overpowers everything else on the bun.

Team Ketchup's fighting words are followed by some that are just as harsh. According to Chowhound, Michigan Daily food columnist Giancarlo Buonomo commented on the controversy by equating putting ketchup on a hot dog to an:

...intuitively disgusting food pairing, like cinnamon in spaghetti sauce or blue cheese with chocolate syrup.

No matter how heated this debate is for some, for others, it just doesn't matter. If someone wants ketchup on a hot dog, no one should stop them. As Brian Grubb of Uproxx writes:

...why hot dogs? No one even blinks when you soak your french fries in ketchup, or glop a full pint of it on a cheeseburger.

There's no reason this logic shouldn't translate to hot dogs as well. Enjoy them whichever way you want.
