Toxic masculinity has made the news a lot lately. It's cited by media outlets from MTV to the Atlantic as a major contributing factor to sexual violence, mass shootings, and terror attacks. But a lot of people have issues with the term, claiming it paints all men with the same brush.

Is the term "toxic masculinity" unfair to men?

Critics who dislike the phrase say it attacks masculinity itself, and that it's essentially saying it's not okay to be male. They say male identity is being stifled by a society where women's power and influence continues to grow. It's as though men are being told something is wrong with them. They believe masculinity is unfairly cited as a factor in acts of mass violence and terrorism—and hey, there's no such thing as "toxic femininity." How fair is that?

But many insist the phrase "toxic masculinity" doesn't disrespect all men any more than the phrase "food poisoning" disses all food. It's a category of masculinity that's being critiqued—one that actually stifles and victimizes men along with women (and humanity in general). They argue that toxic masculinity is a false definition of manhood, one that requires men to be dominant, unemotional, and entitled, and that condones and even encourages violence to maintain power and control. Talking about "toxic masculinity" isn't anti-man: it's anti-violence and anti-patriarchy. And as a factor in tragedies ranging from the Stanford rape case to Orlando, many think it urgently needs to be addressed.
