Is Rite Aid better than Walgreens?

The much talked about merger between Rite Aid and Walgreens isn't happening. Instead, Walgreens will buy roughly half of Rite Aid's stores for $5.2 billion and Rite Aid will double down on its strongest markets on the East Coast and California. Many people favor Walgreens because the stores can be found just about everywhere. You'll always know what you're getting. Others would rather go to Rite Aid because it has Thrifty Ice Cream and tends to have better deals. Which do you prefer?

Chances are, if you ever need anything while you're around town, there's going to be a Walgreens near you. That's the beauty of Walgreens—it's everywhere and it's always in the right place. That's not your imagination by the way—the company's stores are within five minutes of 76% of all Americans

If you want convenience, you go to Walgreens. Being able to serve 76% of all Americans isn't enough for Walgreens. The company is expanding its footprint even further by purchasing roughly half of Rite Aid's stores. Now it'll be even more convenient.

Here are some quick facts about Walgreens:

  • Prescriptions filled in a month: 928 million
  • Total employees: 247,000
  • Customers served daily: 10 million
  • Number of items for sale in a store: 22,000

Rite Aid might be smaller in size, but it commands a loyal following. Rite Aid has three things going for it—it has a great cosmetics selection, it sells Thrifty ice cream and it has great deals. Walgreens can't top that.

Rite Aid's Nail Bar provides customers with the latest in trends and its extensive cosmetics selection has Sephora running for its money. With thousands of locations around the nation, makeup has never been easier.

Perhaps the biggest reason to go to Rite Aid is for Thrifty ice cream. Sure, Walgreens carries ice cream, but it's not Thrifty. It's just as good if not better than any premium ice cream out there. Most premium ice cream has 12% to 16% butterfat. Thrifty ice cream clocks in at a respectable 10.25%, but here's the kicker: a scoop is only $1.79. That doesn't exist anywhere else except at Rite Aid.
