Getting babies to sleep is perhaps the biggest struggle new parents face, and people are deeply divided on the right way to do it. Some advocate for sleep training, or letting babies "cry it out" (CIO). But others strongly oppose the "cry it out" approach, and say it can be psychologically harmful to infants. Proponents of CIO say every situation is different, and sleep-starved parents and babies may require different approaches. Is "cry it out" cruel? What do you think?😭 👶 💤

People who are opposed to the "cry it out" approach think it's truly wrong, and call it harmful, dangerous, and even abusive.

Do you know why letting your baby cry it out feels so wrong?...because it goes against every good mothering instinct you have. And with good reason. Your baby is crying to tell you about his or her wants and needs....refusal to respond to those needs is not teaching your baby to be independent, it's teaching them that they cannot trust you to meet their needs and take care of them.

Others say the guilt trip around CIO is misguided and judgmental. Studies show CIO is safe, and parents need to make the best choice for the health of their entire family.

When infants can’t sleep, it usually means Mom and Dad aren’t getting much shut-eye either. That, in turn, can double the risk of depressive symptoms in mothers, cause strife in marriages and result in costly trips to the pediatrician.

Kelly Winder calls CIO an "adult-centric belief:"

"The practice of ‘crying it out' is entirely a Western, cultural construction, and nothing less than a form of abuse."

But there are numerous studies that show babies whose parents used CIO to help them sleep show no negative effects—and an Australian study showed babies who were sleep trained actually got more sleep.
