Elon Musk announced on Twitter that he received verbal approval to build an underground Hyperloop that would connect New York, Washington D.C., and Baltimore. The problem is, no one knows what he's talking about—including the city of New York. People are calling bullshit, but his supporters are saying wait and see. Musk has pulled off crazy projects in the past and he probably will again. What do you think? 💩

Building an underground Hyperloop that would let people travel between New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. would be a huge and impressive project. The thing is, no one knows who is giving Musk "verbal approval" to make this happen. There's literally no one who can give verbal approval.

A project of this size would require the approval from all the jurisdictions that the tunnel would cut across—meaning New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Maryland would all have to go through the process. This isn't something you give verbal approval to. There's an extensive permitting and review process for projects like this. It just doesn't work that way.

People think Elon Musk is full of shit—at best he's grossly exaggerating what was actually approved and at worst he's just making shit up.

Musk fanboys have full faith that he'll be able to make this happen. He has the unique ability to dream up fantastically wild projects and bring them to fruition. Look at Tesla. Look at SpaceX. He and his team figured out how to land a rocket and reuse it. If anyone can figure out how to make a Hyperloop between those cities and quickly, it's Elon Musk.

Hyperloop One, the company that's running with Musk's idea, has been implementing and testing the Hyperloop concept with success. Musk's Boring Company quickly ramped up and has been testing new methods of creating the massive tunnels necessary to make this happen. Musk is in talks with the city of Los Angeles and Chicago about using Boring Company technology to create new tunnel infrastructure. The foundation for the project is there.

Adding another piece to the puzzle, Business Insider received this statement from the White House. Musk has visited the White House several times this year, although he officially left the advisory council in protest of President Trump withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement.

"We have had promising conversations to date, are committed to transformative infrastructure projects, and believe our greatest solutions have often come from the ingenuity and drive of the private sector."
