Is Elon Musk a hypocrite?

Conservatives are calling Elon Musk a hypocrite for making a big fuss about President Trump and climate change, while he's jetting around the world on a private plane. If people need to change their habits to stop climate change, Musk should too. Others say few leaders are doing more to avert a climate change disaster than Musk. The entire reason he created Tesla and SolarCity was to kick the green energy economy into overdrive and break the world's fossil fuel addiction. What do you think? ✈️

Conservatives say Musk is a false prophet. He's preaching about the dangers of climate change, but refuses to change his lifestyle to help slow climate change. Climate change activists are calling for the U.S. and everyone in the world to radically change the global economy to avert a global crisis. But instead of practicing what they're preaching, people like Musk and other billionaires continue to live like kings, while asking people to upend their lives.

Even worse, Musk has built his empire on the backs of U.S. taxpayers. He's receiving huge subsidies from the federal government and California to jump-start his companies. He and people like him are living like kings at the expense of American taxpayers.

It was reported in 2010 that Musk took private jets to Washington on at least 12 occasions over the course of two years to lobby the Department of Energy for a loan of $465 million, which Musk’s company Tesla was eventually granted.
Around the same time, Tesla also struck deals with the California Alternative Energy and Advanced Transportation Financing Authority that made the company exempt from up to $320 million in California State sales and U.S. taxes.

Others are willing to overlook Musk's use of private jets because of the significant effort he's putting towards creating a better future for Earth. In an expansive series of articles, Tim Urban at Wait But Why takes a deep dive into Tesla, SolarCity and SpaceX and why Musk is attempting such ludicrously ambitious projects.

TL;DR: Musk thinks the world's addiction to fossil fuels is something that can doom humanity. The world we live in responds best to capitalism and markets, so instead of forcing the world to change, he's giving the world a reason to change.

Tesla revived the electric vehicle and made it cool. The PowerWall and Tesla's solar roofing tiles is making solar easier and cooler than ever. He's making green energy a viable thing, so what's the cost of a few jet trips in the grand scheme of things, really. It might not be a great look, but does it really matter?
