Is Breitbart a legitimate source for news?
Breitbart is the anchor for a collection of right-wing media organizations that use social media to inject hyper-partisan views of the world into the national consciousness. The website has attacked media organizations on both the left and right, accusing CNN and Fox News of working for establishment elites. A study highlighted by the Columbia Journalism Review shows Breitbart was able to push traditional media to focus on topics like immigration, radical Islamic terror, and conspiracies about Hillary Clinton.
While mainstream media coverage was often critical, it nonetheless revolved around the agenda that the right-wing media sphere set: immigration. Right-wing media, in turn, framed immigration in terms of terror, crime, and Islam, as a review of Breitbart and other right-wing media stories about immigration most widely shared on social media exhibits. Immigration is the key topic around which Trump and Breitbart found common cause; just as Trump made this a focal point for his campaign, Breitbart devoted disproportionate attention to the topic.
Breitbart's hyper-partisan views has won the media outlet a large and dedicated following—one that includes President Trump himself. Reader think Breitbart is one of the few media organizations that has not been corrupted by corporate money.
Breitbart's critics say the hyper-partisan website is a barely disguised propaganda outlet for people like Steve Bannon and Rebekah Mercer. Mercer and her father are leading the charge to tear down and rebuild American government using their hedge fund fortunes. Breitbart was recently denied a permanent press pass to cover Congress over concerns it is not independent from the Mercer family's bidding.
The committee has so far declined to issue permanent press credentials to the outlet based on a number of concerns, including its independence from figures in the Trump administration and from the Mercer family of Republican donors and related groups.
Critics point out that even if you set politics aside, Breitbart publishes just horrible and vile pieces that should disqualify it as a legitimate source of news. Breitbart was home to disgraced alt-right firebrand Milo Yiannopoulos until an old video surfaced of Milo speaking positively about pedophilia (he then resigned). Here's a small sample of Breitbart headlines CNN rounded up:
