Is it unprofessional to dress up for Halloween at work?

Some live and breathe for the Halloween season. They've spent months brainstorming, workshopping and preparing their costume, and by the time October hits, they are eager to take as many opportunities as possible to unleash their creativity onto the world—including wearing it to work on Halloween itself. Others say dressing up for Halloween as an adult is immature. This camp argues costumes are inappropriate in the workplace. Do you think it's okay to don your Halloween costume in the office?

Here's the thing, Halloween is best when celebrated with unbridled creativity. The classic rules of HR mean certain costumes are off limits: no political puns or references of any kind and, of course, nothing too sexy. And if your costume involves moving pieces, large appendages or props, forget about it. Most workplace settings aren't down for costumes that interrupt the flow of work, and why would you bother wearing your masterpiece to the office if you have to dumb it down? As CNBC's Carmen Reinicke puts it:

Think about how your costume will feel all day. How will a full face of make-up weather your morning commute? Do you want to wear your costume all day, or bring a change of clothes? If you work in an office where you’re sitting at a desk most of the day, how does your costume look from the desk up? Can you answer the phone in a mask, or should you leave that at home?

For these reasons and plenty more, costumes are best left for parties and trick-or-treating.

Halloween is the business world's perfect morale booster. Everyone can join in on the fun at the level that makes them comfortable. Whether you want to dress up as a favorite movie character or you choose to go about your day clad in a wig and make up, you can do whatever makes you happy. If you'd rather simply sport seasonal pumpkin attire, be our guest. No matter your level of commitment, you should be able to express your Halloweens spirit both inside and outside of the office.

Even if you hate Halloween and would rather the holiday not exist, there's a costume for that too:
