Is flossing worth it?

Teeth are pretty simple to take care of when you think about it. All they want is a little brushing and a little flossing, and they gleam happily. Most people brush (we hope) while many others abstain from flossing. Some people stress flossing's importance with regards to getting into the nitty gritty of dental hygiene while others still (including a few studies) say it has no bearing on teeth at all. What do you think?

Flossing is the tried and true method of cleaning out the harder-to-reach parts of your teeth. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), not keeping up with flossing can cause comes to become red, swollen, and more susceptible to bleeding. As NIH dental health expert, Dr. Tim Iafolla, explains:

“Every dentist in the country can look in someone’s mouth and tell whether or not they floss. Cleaning all sides of your teeth, including between your teeth where the toothbrush can’t reach, is a good thing.”

An article on HuffPost.com further states that, despite the fact that the data gleaned from flossing case studies is limited, the potential benefits of diligent flossing outweighs the risks. In other words, there are plenty of studies that say flossing is good and none that say it’s bad. Keep those pearly whites pearly, people.

To the joy of adults and children everywhere, there have been recent studies that claim the benefits of flossing are null and void. As reported by CBC News, the benefits of flossing have actually never been researched. In fact, AP News states that there’s little proof that flossing works at all. How’s that for mind blown?

Although there are plenty of naysayers against the new data coming out against the anti-flossing brigade, it still makes one think. Hey, as long as you’re leveraging the powers of your toothbrush and freshening your breath every once in a while, we’re sure you’ll be fine.
