Should the legal age to vape be raised to 21?

Congress recently passed a law that will raise the legal age to smoke or vape to 21. E-cigarettes have been all over the headlines in 2019, as a number of deaths were tied to vaping. According to BuzzFeed News, the use of e-cigarettes among high school seniors has nearly doubled in the last year, and many believe upping the legal age to purchase vaping products will help counter what's being called an "e-cigarette epidemic." Others say the damage has already been done, and kids will continue to use the products one way or another. What do you think?

In December 2019, BuzzFeed News' Dan Vergano reported:

The legal age in the US to smoke will rise to 21 next year, according to a new law passed by Congress on Thursday. The age increase will cover cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and all other tobacco products.

E-cigarettes made headlines throughout 2019 for their surge in popularity, controversy and health risks. Now, according to Vergano, Congress is moving regulate e-cig usage among teens by increasing the legal age to vape to 21.

American Lung Association President Harold Wimmer hailed the age increase in a statement on the measure, but added, "ultimately, more must be done by both Congress and the Trump Administration if our nation is to halt the youth e-cigarette epidemic."

Given the popularity and dangers of e-cigarettes, some believe the legal age to vape should be even higher

Although the American Lung Association describes vaping as an "epidemic," some say raising the legal age to use e-cigs isn't the answer. The debate between adulthood beginning at 18 or 21 years of age is not a new one, and many point out that if you can serve in the military at age 18, you should be treated as an adult—meaning you should be able to make your own decisions about things like vaping or drinking.

Others believe raising the legal age won't make a difference. If teens are using e-cigs now, they'll continue to do so in the future regardless of what the law says.
