America's weight loss industry is worth $66 billion, yet the majority of us are overweight or obese. Many say this discrepancy proves diets don't work. And even when dieters succeed at losing weight, 95 percent will regain the weight they lost within one year. Critics say the entire diet industry is a scam, but others argue Americans can't just keep going this way. Diets aren't fun, but neither are all the health problems that accompany obesity. Is it time we ditched diets?

Critics say the entire diet industry is based around bad science.

Everyone is blaming dieters for regaining weight they lose, and that's just wrong — it's not their fault they regain weight, and it's not about willpower, or any lack thereof....dieting is bound to fail, it is destined to fail.

Others argue that if you're doing ridiculous crash diets like the Master Cleanse, they won't work. But if you focus on eating healthy foods and getting exercise, and building those habits into your lifestyle, they absolutely can work.

The phrase diets don't work has been drummed into us by book titles, advertising slogans, and other such mantras. But the truth is, you can lose weight following pretty much every diet on the bookstore shelf. The problem is that unless the diet fits your lifestyle, it's bound to fail, and your weight will creep back on.

Others say enough with the fat phobia and body shaming already. People can be healthy at any size.

Weight Watchers caught a lot of heat online for launching a free program for teens.

But others argue Weight Watchers does good in that they offer people a community to support them in a healthier lifestyle. They think the body positivity movement is not being honest about the effect that being overweight has on their health.
