Does Gawker deserve defending? | The Tylt
The scandalous Gawker vs. Hulk Hogan invasion-of-privacy lawsuit over a sex tape made headlines. The lawsuit became even bigger when it turned out billionaire Peter Thiel was paying Hogan's legal bills out of personal animosity toward Gawker. Hogan's suit resulted in a $140 million jury award, enough to potentially put the controversial blog out of business.
Is Gawker getting what they deserve?
Gawker has earned its fair share of enemies over the years, particularly for publicly outing Theil and others. But writer Stephen Marche (a frequent target of Gawker's ridicule) penned a stirring defense of Gawker in which he argues that despite its "gutter press" rep, the publisher deserves more support than it is getting.
"Gawker serves an essential function in a celebrity-obsessed culture, and if it were to disappear the world would be poorer and the cause of journalistic truth would be damaged," Marche writes. There's also the unsettling precedent of billionaires killing publications they don't like by drowning them in lawsuits.Gawker's critics argue the publication is little more than a cyber bully, and this latest suit is simply the chickens coming home to roost. In 2015, Gawker infamously exposed the CFO of a media company for cheating on his wife with a male prostitute. Gawker's crueler moments have left them with far fewer defenders, and many people think this sort of "journalism" deserves to go under.
What do you think: Should people #StandWithGawker? Or just say #ScrewGawker, they're getting what they deserve?
Does Gawker deserve defending?
The fact that anyone is saying "I stand with Gawker" unironically is why I won't cry when the meteor finally kills us all.— Dan Wingreen (@Captain_Cy_kun) May 31, 2016
People are actually saying "I stand with Gawker"? Sweet mercy if the next one is "I stand with TMZ" we will have reached Idiocracy in 2016.— Rocked (@RockedReviews) May 31, 2016
