It's that time of year when brands pretend they're funny and ruin the Internet for a few days. April Fools' Day used to be about actual pranks—probably its own special hell—but now it's defined by shitty jokes from the likes of Lyft and NPR that most people could do without. But others aren't so hateful and enjoy playing a little prank to bring some joy and mayhem into people's lives. Which side are you on? 😈

There are a lot of reasons to hate April Fools' Day, but the main reason is it's not funny. Instead of actual pranks, we get questionable and bad jokes from brands that somehow manage to miss the mark and be infuriating at the same time. Besides, in the era of fake news, do we really need to spend brain power wondering if Lyft has gone batshit insane? Say no to dumb marketing.

All this was occurring while street culture began to fade, at least in part because of the popularity of automobiles. Fewer chance encounters on the street meant fewer strangers to prank, while the holiday spread wildly throughout media industry. Brands started to figure out that a good April Fools’ Day prank guaranteed free publicity — either from a member of the media falling for the hoax, or by an entertained journalist writing about the prank. “In a way, April Fools’ Day has become less interactive and now it's more a form of passive entertainment,” Boese says. “I compare it to the way people watch the Super Bowl — where you watch it for the ads. In a similar way, people now wait for the ads on April Fools’ Day to see what kind of strange stuff the advertisers are going to dream up and the weird gimmicks they'll come out with.”

But some people love the pranks and gags on April Fools's Day—and who can blame them? Some of them of actually really good. 😂
