Do you still use the post office?

Let's talk about the USPS. From love letters to thank you notes, holiday gifts to care packages, and mail-in voting to letters to your local congressperson, there are many ways to utilize snail mail. Nevertheless, the coronavirus pandemic has placed stress on the postal service, and according to CNN, USPS workers are worried that new procedures will impact their ability to do their jobs. Meanwhile, many people feel disconnected to the postal service. While it used to be a pillar of daily life, the nature of mail and how you interact with it has changed. When you think about it, when's the last time you visited a post office?

Although some might think of the postal service as obsolete, others point out that American society is still heavily dependent upon the USPS. When new pressures materialized in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, people across the country tried to support their local post offices and postal workers by buying stamps en masse. NPR's Austin Horn reports:

Since the crisis began, the Postal Service's business has tanked. Mail volume has decreased by nearly a third, and the agency is projecting a $13 billion shortfall for the year. As a result, the Postal Service is asking lawmakers for as much as $89 billion in cash infusions to weather the financial storm.

Keep in mind, even if you're not mailing a letter a day, USPS is responsible for a lot of services you may depend on without realizing it. Mail-in voting is the top example as of late. Some say even if you haven't thought about the post office in quite a while, now is the time for support!

But for some, the post office truly has fallen out of mind. Although more people are relying on mail in a new way since the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S., for some, the post office was and is obsolete.
