Do you still keep a diary?

Diaries are little self-histories when you think about it: They detail specific days and times in your life that, while minimal in the grand scheme of things, are monumental to you. Some were required to keep them as part of high-school English class while others decided to write about their crushes on their own time. Heck, some people still keep a diary to this day, ensuring mnemonic preservation and inspiring introspection. Others quit the habit eons ago. How about you?

There are many underappreciated benefits to keeping a diary. For one, it helps you win (or lose) arguments with someone over a detail that occurred in the past. For another, looking back on old entries can serve as a metric for how far you’ve progressed in life, as well as allow you to reflect a bit on who you are as a person and where improvements can be made. It’s almost like having a verbal mirror that forces you to look really, really hard at yourself. Maybe even a little too hard, sometimes.

Authors such as David Sedaris have stressed the importance of maintaining a lifelong habit of diary writing, especially if you want to have a writing career yourself. If not, well, at least it’ll be a great read for those who discover it in the future!

There’s essentially no point in keeping a diary past the point of puberty. If you do, it’s a bit juvenile, no? Plus, writing your thoughts down also exposes it to other people. Do you really want that to happen? It was bad enough when our siblings read our diaries as kids (looking at you, Gina), imagine having that happen with, you know, adult thoughts!

Besides, a large part of the growing process is preserving some memories while letting go of others. There’s no need to reflect upon every cringeworthy aspect of your life.
