Should we get rid of daylight savings?

Daylight Saving Time starts up again on Sunday, March 10. Soon, people will be upset when they have to move their clocks one hour forward. This is inconvenient enough to make some people think we should get rid of the thing altogether. Others say Daylight Saving Time has positive effects. What do you think?

Daylight Savings Time is not only unnecessary and dumb but also terrible, wrong, and essentially evil. It messes up your sleep which in turn messes with your limbic system which basically messes up your life. And for what?

Except Daylight Savings Time is good. It allows us to enjoy sunlight for longer periods of time, is better for the environment, and lowers crime!

A new paper from the Brookings Institute finds that there's a 7 percent decrease in crime following the shift to DST. In 2007, when DST was extended through November 1 (a decision on which Prerau was an advisor), that drop resulted in an estimated $59 million in savings from robberies not committed. (If you include crimes for which we must estimate dollar amounts, such as rape that number goes up to $246 million. Those estimates involve medical costs, prosecutions, police expenses, that kind of thing.) The reason is simple: crimes tend to happen much more often in darkness. Extend the daylight, and crimes, especially outdoor crimes like muggings, go down.
