Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast to what he initially found to be an extremely religious household. After periodically butting heads with his father, he eventually moved in with a much older woman (his mom’s friend, no less), served in the trenches of France, and eventually became a teacher at Oxford. It was there that he met J.R.R. Tolkien, forming a literary group deemed “The Inklings” that penned some of the most inspirational tales of all time. The rest is, as they say, history.

Fiction and nonfiction works aside, C.S. Lewis was known to be as satyr-like as Mr. Tumnus. What does that mean? Well, he certainly liked to hit the bottle and indulge in red meat. Whether he enjoyed other satyr habits popularized by Greek mythology…well, let’s not ruin our respective childhoods, shall we?

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was exposed to tragedy prior to the horrors he saw during World War I. His father died overseas in South Africa when he was a child, his mother years later, leaving him and his younger brother orphaned in the midst of their childhood. The one shining light in all this darkness was that it was during this time period in which he first met his wife, Edith Bratt, who served as his emotional compass and foundation well unto the end of their days. Given the rest, though, Tolkien was sure to rise above his unfortunate circumstances, finding the good and beauty in his life and encompassing into one of the most influential trilogies in literature—"The Lord of the Rings."

The film adaptation of the series also swept awards season the year it was released, setting records and causing the Academy to stew over the fact the fantasy genre could actually hold some clout. Suck it, Hollywood.
