Favorite sugar-free soft drink: Diet Coke or Coke Zero Sugar?

Coca-Cola first debuted Diet Coke in 1982 to much fanfare and a lot of secrecy. Coke Zero came nearly 30 years later and has quickly emerged as the go-to sugar-free soft drink for men. It just got an update in 2017, getting a (slightly) new name, look, and taste. The differences are part perception and part ingredients, but that’s enough to elicit strong opinions in fans. While both taste like Cokewhich soft drink do you love most?

Diet Coke, which debuted in 1982, is easily the best-selling sugar-free soft drink of all time and second-most popular soda after good ol' fashioned Coca-Cola. Coke Zero was created for male audiences (the word “diet” seemed to appeal more to female consumer) but both beverages have ardent fans across all genders.

The average American drinks 45 gallons of soda a year. Makes sense that reducing the sugar content in soft drinks is a good idea. For many, it's a calorie-free way to get a quick caffeine fix.

A couple of our editors below take a few taste tests and share their love of Diet Coke and Coke Zero Sugar. Which one is your favorite?

Diet drinks are nothing new. They’ve been around since the 1950s. The first big success was Diet Coke’s older sibling Tab. But nothing can compare to the popularity of Diet Coke.

Diet Coke is the queen of sugar-free soda. It’s by far the most popular, worldwide. It also offers a bigger caffeine boost than Coke Zero does. Fans say that Diet Coke has a bit of a bite and a pleasant sizzle on your tongue with the first sip. Any drink that Frank Sinatra and Lady Gaga agree on must be on the right track.

Some Diet Coke fans are ride-or-die with the beverage and cannot make it through an entire day without a glass. One of those individuals is President Trump, who has a red button on the Resolute Desk wireless to alert a White House butler to bring the president a Diet Coke. The president reportedly drinks 12 Diet Cokes per day.

Part of what Coke Zero Sugar fans like is the look. The characteristic black can design for Coke Zero originally was intended for only New Zealand, due to the popularity of the All Blacks rugby team. But Coca-Cola liked the look and changed it worldwide.

Coke Zero Sugar is like the cool cousin of regular Coke and Diet Coke. Coke Zero Sugar fans also like the bite, saying it has a harder edge than Diet Coke. It tastes a tad less sweet, putting more emphasis on the fizzy carbonation. You get the bubbly, caffeinated kick without a lighter sweetness.

12 years after it debuted, Coca-Cola decided to tweak Coke Zero and introduced to the world to the all-new and improved Coca-Cola Zero Sugar. It is still rocking the red-and-black aesthetic, but Coca-Cola Zero Sugar has a slightly modified list of natural flavors proprietary to Coca-Cola. What does that mean? It has the same bit as before, but should theoretically taste even more like regular Coca-Cola.
