There are basically two schools of thought. Vanilla is the ultimate classic. It's purity is a thing of beauty and lends itself to infinite pairings and toppings. Chocolate, on the other hand, raises the bar. It's rich flavor brings out the best in some, but is a little too bold for others. When it comes to milkshakes–the most efficient way to consume these delicious flavors–which is superior?

After many years at the top of the list, The Guardian reports that chocolate has finally unseated vanilla as America's favorite ice cream flavor.

Although vanilla maintained the title for years, it holds a steady second place. Still, in milkshake form, there's something so pure about vanilla. It's light, refreshing, and the perfect compliment to most sodas, burgers, and really any other food you can imagine. There is nothing, nothing more magical than dipping a crisp, salty fry into a vanilla milkshake.

Vanilla haters may call it boring, but what vanilla shakes lack in flare, they make up for in quality.

But chocolate taps into a love that borders on addiction. Want more chocolate? Top your shake with chocolate syrup. Want a contrast? No rules against whipped cream! Or better yet, why not just top your shake with an entire brownie?

Chocolate provides a comfort unlike any other, and in shake form, chocoholics can take advantage of their own possibilities. Forget pairings with other flavors, chocolate itself has tons of differentiations, ranging from white chocolate milkshakes to chocolate malts. Plus, chocolate is healthier...right?
