Will you complete the census?

The 2020 Census is here, but not everyone is rushing to complete it. Although many have extra downtime due to shelter-in-place mandates, a lot of Americans are nervous to participate in the population survey. Some undocumented immigrants fear filling out the document, worrying it will alert authorities of their status. Others fear the government isn't being honest about how it will really use their personal information. Despite the push back, the government is urging everyone to fill out the census and has even recruited celebrities to push the initiative. Will you fill out the 2020 Census?

Completing the 2020 Census is a short and easy process. You can fill out the questionnaire online or you can mail in the document. According to the Census 2020 website, not only is completing the survey your civic duty, but it will help fund communities and determine how many elected officials will represent your state in Washington, D.C..

From celebrities to universities, many are trying to get the word out on why the 2020 census is so important.

But everyone isn't on board with the idea of giving the government their name, address and household size. Undocumented people fear the Census Bureau isn't being truthful about how it will use the report. The census does not ask for citizenship status, but many undocumented immigrants are still fearful they will face severe consequences if they are discovered. And despite The Supreme Courts' decision to not include a question about citizenship, executive director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund, Arturo Vargas, told NBC due to America's treatment toward immigrants, some undocumented Latinos aren't taking any chances.

They believe there will be a citizenship question on the form despite its absence and many fear how the data will be used,” Vargas said. “This is exacerbated by a hostile environment toward immigrants propagated by this administration.”

But undocumented immigrants aren’t the only ones wary of the census. There are plenty of other census critics who are openly voicing their condemnation of the survey.
