Is it acceptable to drink stouts in the summer?

A stout is essentially a dark type of beer (think Guinness). Not to be confused with porters, stouts hold a distinct roasted flavor and are sometimes infused with delicious ingredients such as bourbon. Due to their color and perceived heaviness, a portion of the beer-drinking community states sipping stouts in warmer climates (i.e., the summer) is taboo. Others argue that you should drink whatever beer you want at any time, stouts included. Which is correct?

Stouts are a smooth, creamy delight. Their silky texture allows them to go down easily, making for a pleasant drinking experience. Depending on what type you get, a stout doesn’t necessarily have to be heavy. In fact, some varieties of stouts are pretty light when compared to other types of beer. They're just as worthy of a spot on the summer-drinking totem as the lightest pilsner is.

How can drinking something really be seasonal, anyway? If it’s enjoyable people should be able to drink it any time they please. Cheers to those breaking social conventions.

Stouts are too heavy. Some find that drinking them can be way too overwhelming; they don’t allow for the same kind of hot-temperature enjoyment lighter beers do. The less dark the beer is, the more upbeat you can be in the heat. How can someone even move around in hotter temperatures when they’re so weighed down by the stout they just guzzled?

Then again, some people find drinking any type of beer in the summer is too much. Pass the chardonnay, please.
