Can Caitlyn Jenner be a trans rights advocate and a Republican at the same time? | The Tylt
Caitlyn Jenner made headlines June 29 when she had positive words for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. In an interview with STAT magazine, she was asked whether Democrats or Republicans better understood transgender issues. She replied:
I’m on the conservative Republican side....Everybody looks at the Democrats as being better with these issues. But Trump seems to be very much for women. He seems very much behind the LGBT community because of what happened in North Carolina with the bathroom issue. He backed the LGBT community.
Does Jenner betray women and LGBT people with that stance?
Jenner's conservative views have been controversial in the past. Her support for ultra-conservative anti-gay senator Ted Cruz angered many LGBT folks, who don't see how Jenner, a trans woman who aspires to be a spokesperson for the trans community, can endorse right-wing politicians. Critics say her fame and wealth insulate her from the struggles everyday women and LGBT people face. Joy Behar went so far as to say that Jenner being a Cruz supporter was "like Jews for Hitler." People just don't think she can be an ally and a Republican.
Others have defended Jenner, saying that it is unrealistic and unfair to expect all trans people to conform to the same political viewpoint. Some have even argued she could do more for trans and gay issues as a Republican, and that calling her a traitor is a closed-minded stance. "Trans people are different from one another in every possible way, and that includes politics," said trans activist Julia Serano.
Can Caitlyn Jenner be conservative and an advocate for her community? Or does she sell them out by voting Republican?
