Is booing ever okay?

Some performances stink on ice. In fact, some people stink on ice, or off. It’s a weird moment, going to a game or a concert or talk or whatnot and view failure in real time. Maybe their talent just isn’t on display that night; maybe they make a pretty big foul-up. Whichever the case, a few audience members take it upon themselves to start booing those in the spotlight. Others stay silent, finding this heckling embarrassing and wholly unnecessary. What do you think?

Let’s face it—some people are absolutely deserving of the boos they get. His majesty, the diva Jack White, was once booed for playing less than an hour set for fans in New York. Kanye West got booed for that whole Taylor Swift thing back in 2009. Just because someone’s on stage doesn’t mean they’re exempt from criticism: If they’re doing something inappropriate or disrespectful, they absolutely deserved to get booed.

Someone might get heckled because they did something absolutely detestable off-stage as well. Whatever the case, people have what’s coming to them in the long run. Booing is just another form of cosmic justice.

There are some cases of booing that are straight-up unjustified. Anne Hathaway was purportedly booed by fans because she didn’t have time to entertain them after a fashion malfunction and the flu made her late for her BAFTA appearance (no, Annie!); Drake at Camp Flog Gnaw. Audiences can be entitled little jerks, the worst parts of them captured on a video that goes viral.

In general, though, booing as a whole is unnecessary. It’s like not tipping a waiter or waitress—they have to be particularly bad for you not to leave that 20 percent (unless it’s Europe, obviously). There are specific social mores that you abide by no matter what in life, and not being a person—no matter how cringeworthy the performance may be—is one of them. Stay classy, people.
