The app is made for groups of friends who, as Gretchen Wieners puts it, "wouldn't buy a skirt without asking their friends first." According to Cosmopolitan's Taylor Andrews:

Ship allows users to invite their married, single, and/or 'it’s complicated' friends to join so they can swipe on the single friend’s behalf. Your crew is automatically entered in a group chat where you can share matches, talk about profiles you’re digging on the app, and swipe at everyone’s own convenience.

Ship is streamlining exactly what you're doing outside of Tinder and Bumble: sending your friends screenshots and asking for their opinion. Cosmo's Andrews reports:

'Every woman knows half the fun of dating is talking about it with your friends, so we took that behavior and put it into the Ship app,' explains the team behind Betches.

According to the Betches founders, Aleen Kuperman, Jordana Abraham, and Samantha Fishbein, dating apps are already fraught with anxiety, and inviting your friends to the process helps alleviate some of that tension. They give you a boost of confidence when you need it and confirm your gut-feelings when you're unsure.

Who wouldn't prefer Ship's method over being alone in the dark, scary world that is swiping right?

Betches explains the motivation behind creating Ship:

You no longer have to get your friends to wear disguises and sit across the bar on your first date, because we have something even better. Ship allows your friends to swipe for you, and you can send profiles in the in-app group chat before you swipe, or after you match. The chat makes it easy for your friends to discuss a match (and spot any red flags or hidden gems) before you commit to a date.

Although it might be easier to have your friends weigh in on every decision you make, shouldn't dating be an area where you make choices independently? Ship is sure to spark dates and casual relationships, but beginning a conversation with a stranger after fully dissecting that person with your friends is not exactly healthy.

Plus, the other party will know they've just been discussed amongst a friend group–as is the premise of the app–which is likely to make them uncomfortable and lead to distrust... before a relationship has even begun! Unfortunately, your friends can't do the dating for you.
