Best pizza slice: New York-style or Chicago deep dish?

New York-style pizza is an age-old classic. It's thin, but not flimsy. Crispy, but not burnt. Simple, but elegant. You can't find a better pizza slice. Chicago would call bullshit on that claim. Deep dish pizza is near and dear to every Chicagoan's heart. It's an unapologetic and unashamed pizza—it oozes mozzarella and tomato sauce, all contained by a beautiful, buttery crust. Which pizza is better? 🍕

Nick Kindelsperger at Serious Eats says a New York pizza is all about balance. Here's how he puts it.

Every element on a New York slice is about the greater good. The hope is that the crust, sauce, and cheese combine to form one balanced bite. If one aspect stands out too much, the whole slice falters (or literally collapses on itself).

In contrast, deep dish is all about the individual expression of all the ingredients. This is a big pizza and it leaves a lot of room for the ingredients to take the stage.

Deep dish is sort of the opposite. It's just plain bigger in every way, making it is easier to isolate each element and evaluate it. This makes it possible to genuinely appreciate one element, even if another doesn't work as well.
