Donald Trump was caught on tape joking that because he's famous, he can grab women "by the pussy." In subsequent apologies, Trump chalked this up to "locker room talk" and reiterated he never actually assaulted anyone. The video and his response have spurred a national conversation. Are Trump's statements a classic example of how men talk about women behind closed doors, or is it an extreme example that most men would disavow? Read more and vote below.

No one is going to deny that people talk in locker rooms. The question is, what does "locker room talk" really consist of. When men are together and bonding, often through sports, do they really joke about sexual assault?

Lots of men are standing up and calling "bullshit." There's a reason we call it "toxic."

Athletes are not feeling Trump's "locker room talk" excuse. Many have come out publicly to call out Trump.

Locker room talk is a real thing. It's not the nicest of male traits, but it's an undeniable reality.

"I definitely remember certain guys who were always trying to one-up each other with tales of their sexual exploits. Some of it was probably grounded in reality, much of it was surely exaggerated. Not everyone participated in this kind of talk, of course, and even back then I could tell that some guys who weren’t really like that were sucked into it and felt like they needed to compete in this way to be accepted. Some guys were just jerks who treated women as objects. Across the board, this kind of talk masked a lot of insecurities and emotional immaturity."

Trump isn't talking about literal locker rooms. But he is acknowledging that he was making jokes and perhaps puffing his chest out a bit to impress his company.

He was sharing a story about failed sexual exploits and joking that as a billionaire alpha male he doesn't have trouble attracting ladies. It makes him a jerkbut not too far off from how lots of guys talk. This is the kind of talk you might hear from corporate lawyers, political power players, college athletes and more.

It's creepy and not something for polite company, but it happens and we should admit it. Right or wrong, this is one of the ways certain men bond. It's crude, and Trump's specific reference to sexual assault should never be acted on, but maybe it never was. Maybe this was meant to be nothing more than a joke.

"I have to assess people based on what I see in totem," said Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway. "And this is a man I've been alone with many times who's never been anything but gracious and [a] gentleman and elevated me to the top level of his campaign, the way he's elevated women in the Trump organization for decades, because he respects women."

From a Trump supporter:

"Obviously it was very offensive, however, it is totally irrelevant it was so long ago. And I do believe that most men will talk about women in ways that they would never talk about publicly and if they would have known they were being recorded there is no doubt in my mind their their conversation would have been totally different..... That is wrong, absolutely. But here's the thing, he's not running to be the Pope."
