Are juice cleanses bullshit?

From the Master Cleanse to green juice cleanses, detoxification through juice is everywhere—and it's big business, $5 billion a year and growing. Dr. Oz has a juice cleanse, and Gwyneth Paltrow swears by them. But critics say there's no science behind cleansing or detoxifying your body with diet. They claim much of the juicing craze is just weight loss and disordered eating concealed under the guise of health. But millions of people swear juice cleanses improve their health. What do you think?

Here's Vani Hari, a.k.a. the Food Babe, on how juice cleansing actually detoxifies your body:

Your body is probably used to eating and digesting food at least 4 times a day – sometimes more. That keeps your digestive organs busy, devoting constant energy to digestion all day long.Especially if you are eating a diet rich in cooked foods, refined sugars, and meat, your body is working overtime to create the enzymes needed to digest all of that food. This can really put a heavy burden on your whole body!
A juice cleanse will give your digestive system a much needed break, as you consume only enzyme-rich raw juice that is easy for your body to breakdown and digest. This gives your body significantly more energy to devote to releasing toxins!

But nutritionists and psychologists alike say there's no real science behind the cleanses. They criticize juice cleansing and detoxes as just crash dieting rebranded, which has been proven to be bad for your mental and physical health. Healthy weight loss happens incrementally, but juice cleanses are nothing if not extreme.

Gwyneth Paltrow's website has an entire detailed section on how to juice cleanse properly—and we must admit, Gwyn looks pretty healthy to us.

Yeah, but Paltrow also sells a rock you can put in your vagina for detox purposes (for $66!). Why is she so convinced everyone's so toxic and dirty? Oh right, so she can sell you the cleanse.

Medical professionals say you have a liver and kidneys for a reason, and that juice is not going to "cleanse" you.

But others swear by them for health and energy.

And honestly, fruits and vegetables in any form are far healthier than the typical processed American diet. Between heart disease and cancer, fast food is a hell of a lot more dangerous than any cleanse.
