Amazon, for one, is a seamless shopping experience that’s spread its original platform into many other businesses. Then there’s eBay, the underdog that performs just as well. Between the two, which one has the better deals?

Amazon launched on November 4, 1995, as an online bookseller. Twenty-four years later, the business has expanded to every type of product imaginable. The company has even dipped its toes into media, assuming ownership of the Huffington Post and delving into the TV and film industry.

Today, the company is valued at billions of dollars. Its offices have become desirable assets to cities looking to boost their economies and jobs. And to think people originally viewed it as a passing dot-com fad.

Originally called “AuctionWeb,” eBay was also formed in 1995 as a platform “dedicated to bringing together buyers and sellers in an honest and open marketplace.” In a way they were Amazon before Amazon sold items beyond books. The site purchased several big-name companies in the early 2000s—one of them being PayPal—although many were eventually sold off as independent entities.

Although it may not be as prominent as Amazon, eBay managed to rack up about $10.8 billion dollars in sales revenue over the past year. Many also applaud how the company gives back to communities via its eBay Foundation, and the way it offers alternative deals should Amazon crash.
