Is it rude to use abbreviations?

Abbreviations and acronyms make everyone's life easier, but not everyone agrees on when it's appropriate to use them. Some people see no need to abbreviate "thank you" to "ty" or "no problem" to "np"—doing so comes off as rude. And if you turn "happy birthday" into "hbd," we all know you don't really mean it. But others have no problem using abbreviations. If they make your life more efficient, abbreviate away. What do you think?

Words have meaning—we know this. That's why when you choose an abbreviation over certain words and phrases, it seems like your sentiment is half-hearted. When you say "hbd!" instead of "happy birthday!" to your friend, you're going to leave that person feeling like you couldn't be bothered to actually wish them a fully happy day.

If you say "congrats" instead of "congratulations" to a coworker, you automatically sounds like you don't mean it. And if you're boss Slacks you "ty" in place of "thank you," you can bet that they don't really appreciate what you've done (and you should probably spend the next half hour stressing out about what you did wrong!).

And if someone sends you the motherload, the anvil of all abbreviations, "K," just throw your phone away right there. You're toast.

But for some, using abbreviations is NBD! Why wouldn't you shorten your words if you can? It's more efficient. If someone perceives an alternate meaning in you abbreviated message, that's their problem. Even Ellen agrees!

Abbreviations and acronyms make life easier. In a world of limited characters and limited time, there's no other choice. Whether you're ordering a BLT, looking at a GIF, or simply AFK, shortening phrases is the way to go.
