Was 2017 the worst year ever?

2017 very well could be the worst year on record. The Trump administration has turned the White House into a political sideshow. Tweets are drawing the U.S. closer to nuclear war. Men are just awful. Net neutrality is dead. Some think this is the darkest timeline. Others point out that both America and the world have been through much worse. So what if your Netflix is slow and the White House is occupied by a game show host? Go complain to someone alive in 1943. What do you think? 😬

2017 was the year the culture wars started back in full. Trump is waging war against the #FakeNews media. Conservatives and liberals are at each other's throats. Nazis and white supremacists are back. Awful men in media, politics, Hollywood and elsewhere are being exposed. People are brawling in the streets over politics. That's not even all of it!

Here's a non-comprehensive list of all the crazy things that happened in 2017:

  • January 20 - Trump is sworn in and immediately picks a fight about the crowd size at his inauguration.
  • January 21 - Millions march to protest Donald Trump's presidency
  • February 11 - North Korea launches a missile over Japan.
  • February 13 - Former National Security advisor Michael Flynn resigns over connections to foreign governments.
  • March 29 - The UK votes to leave the European Union.
  • April 4 - The Syrian regime uses chemical weapons against its own citizens.

  • June 1 - The U.S. officially withdraws from the Paris accords.
  • June 25 - The U.N. estimates over 200,000 in Yemen have died due to cholera.
  • July 21 - Anthony Scaramucci joins the White House as White House Communications Director.
  • July 27Anthony Scaramucci leaves the White House.
  • August 25 - Myanmar military begins alleged ethnic cleansing operations against the Rohingya in Myanmar, killing and displacing thousands.

  • September 3 - North Korea tests its most powerful nuclear test to date.
  • September 6 - Hurricane Irma, the strongest hurricane on record in the Atlantic Basin, causes at least 134 deaths and more than $63 billion in damage.
  • September 19 - A magnitude 7.1 earthquake hits Mexico killing 369 people.
  • September 19 - Hurricane Maria sweeps through the Caribbean, damaging areas already hit by Hurricane Irma just weeks before. Maria caused at least 94 deaths and $103 billion in damage.
  • October 1 - A gunman opens fires on a crowd in Las Vegas, killing 58 and injuring 546.
  • November 12 - A magnitude 7.3 earthquake hits Iran, killing at least 530 people and leaving thousands homeless.

Then again, here is a very short list of things in America's history arguably much worse than what 2017 wrought. For starters: the enslavement of black Americans is infinitely worse than anything that has happened this year.

#ItCouldBeWorse

And let us not forget that millions of Americans died in the Civil War over slavery.

World War I also devastated the globe, leaving millions dead and the world order shattered. Not a fun moment for America.

#ItCouldBeWorse

The Great Depression plunged the world into crisis and created the conditions for Nazi Germany's rise.

#ItCouldBeWorse

The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, dragging the U.S. into World War II.

There was also that whole thing about the U.S. and the Soviet Union wanting to nuke each other for several decades. The Cuban Missile Crisis brought the world to the brink of annihilation. Duck and cover!

#ItCouldBeWorse

Or what about the year President John F. Kennedy was assassinated?

#ItCouldBeWorse

Or when Martin Luther King was also assassinated?
